When Your Roots Are Speaking—Listen

When Your Roots Are Speaking—Listen.

By Dr. Nana Akaeze | The Awake Voice

This is my voice. This is my belief.

Because in a noisy world that applauds branches and ignores roots,
someone must remind us where true strength comes from.

Because a generation is drowning in comparison, competition, and quiet envy
Must learn again that growth begins beneath the surface.

And because no tree can survive long
when the very soil feeding has turned toxic.

This message is a continuation of the lesson we began:

“The Tree and Its Roots: A Lesson for Us All.”

But today, the roots are speaking— and we must listen.

It's almost the end of the year 2025: Worthy Note.

The Tree and Its Roots: A Lesson for Us All

Have you ever looked at a mighty tree and wondered where its strength truly comes from?

It's not in the branches that stretch toward the sky, nor in the flowers that steal our gaze.

The tree's true power lies beneath the ground, hidden, silent, but strong.

The roots are what feed it.

They carry water, minerals, and life itself, nourishing the trunk, lifting the branches, and helping the tree bloom into beauty and fruitfulness.

Now, think of human life the same way.

Each of us has roots in our family, friends, mentors, and community.

They should be the unseen forces that hold us up, guide us, and feed our growth.

No great man or woman, whether it’s Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Davido, or anyone we admire, ever stood tall alone.

They blossomed because their roots held firm, not competing with or undercutting them.

They were watered by love, encouragement, and support from people who believed in them.

Those flowers you admire on another tree, those flawless blossoms you call stars, leaders, or successful people, did not appear by chance.

They were sustained by their roots, which kept supplying them with the necessary nutrients, strength, and water to survive and flourish.

If their roots had been bad, refusing to nourish them, they would have withered long before they could ever shine.

But look around today: too many of us are busy poisoning our own roots. Competing with the untapped and wasting time chasing in the dark.

We envy, criticize, and try to pull down our brothers, colleagues, classmates, and sisters instead of nourishing them.If you support those you do not know and try to pull down your own!

Remember, the root and stem will not wither; it will be sustained by the resilience of faith, and when it blossoms, it is very easy to cut off the dead branches.

We forget that when we cut down another, we weaken our own forest.

When we refuse to support our own, we dry up the soil that should sustain our shared growth.

It’s time for a rethink!

People move on, but face your tree to water it!

If we want to see flowers and fruits among us, we must first care for the roots.

Support your friend’s dream.

Celebrate your brother’s success.

Stand behind your sister’s vision.

Because when one of us blooms, the fragrance blesses us all.

Let’s stop pulling ourselves down while admiring others who were not pulled down by their own.

Let’s start watering the roots, so that together, we can grow, blossom, and bear fruits that generations will admire.

I encourage you today to see the good in our own growing trees.

This helps to bring out the good in us.

Believe it or not, whether you support, appreciate, or envy it;

When God has spoken, grace will overtake envy and all... and the flower will still blossom regardless.

Note: where there is grace, there cannot be disgrace.

So, embrace something great so that you, too, will be called great.

Your Life Grows From the Ground Up

Look at a strong tree.

Its branches may dance in the wind,
its flowers may steal attention,
its fruits may attract admiration…

But none of that is where its power begins.

The real work—the real strength—
Lies deep in the soil.

The roots feed it.
The roots stabilize it.
The roots define its future.

Now, think of your life the same way.

Your roots are:

• your mindset
• your values
• your discipline
• your relationships
• your circle
• your emotional and spiritual foundations

Every blossom you will ever produce
comes from the health of these hidden foundations.

Many People Are Sabotaging Their Own Roots

Here is the uncomfortable truth:

Some people are not failing because of lack of talent—
they are failing because of bad roots.

The roots are polluted with:

• envy
• comparison
• bitterness
• competition
• jealousy
• unhealed wounds
• destructive friendships

And the soil can no longer nourish their growth.

If you fear or resent the success of those connected to you,
you are standing closer to failure than progress.

Dr. Nana Akaeze

Envy is not silent.
Envy is erosion.
Envy is self-sabotage.

It dries your soil until nothing meaningful can grow.

The moment you begin to resent the rising of someone you know,
your own destiny begins to shrink.

No Great Tree Stands Alone

Every person you admire today, whether in politics, entertainment, leadership, or service, was watered by others.

Barack Obama did not rise alone.
Michelle Obama did not rise alone.
Davido did not rise alone.
Serena Williams did not rise alone.

Unseen hands sustained every shining star,
Faithful supporters and deep roots that nourished them.

Behind every blossom is a root system.

The world sees the fruit, but God sees the root.
Dr. Nana Akaeze

So before you envy another tree,
ask yourself:

What are their roots feeding them
that you refuse to feed yourself?

We Are Becoming a Generation That Poisons Its Own Roots

We pull down our friends.
We critique our siblings.
We mock our colleagues.
We compete with our classmates.
We support strangers loudly and sabotage our own quietly.

We admire trees that were never pulled down by their own people,
yet we uproot those closest to us.

But hear this truth:

When you cut down another, you weaken the entire forest.
Dr. Nana Akaeze

Because each of us is connected.

When you refuse to support your own community, you dry the soil that should sustain all of you.

When you poison the soil with envy, your own roots suffer first.

It’s Time to Water Your Own Tree—And Help Others Bloom

If you want to see flowers and fruits among us, we must begin where all life begins, the roots.

Water the dreams of your friends.
Stand behind the visions of your sisters.
Support the courage of your brothers.
Encourage the gifts you see in others.
Celebrate blessings without bitterness.

Because when one of us blooms, the fragrance blesses us all.

And when God decides to lift a person,
no amount of envy can uproot what He has planted.

“Where grace flows, disgrace cannot survive.”
Dr. Nana Akaeze

Your future is not determined by the achievements of others. It is determined by the choices you make about your own soil.

A New Year Is Coming—Guard Your Roots

2026 is almost here.

Before the year changes, change your soil.

Let go of envy.
Let go of bitterness.
Let go of comparison.
Let go of the silent competition dragging your soul down.

Your root determines your rise.

Honor your roots.
Strengthen your soil.
Protect your growth.

Because the tree you are becoming
is waiting for you to nourish it.

And the world is waiting to see what God has been growing underground all along.

Youth in Nigeria: Agitations, Accountability, and the Urgent Need for Strategic Rethinking

Youth in Nigeria: Agitations, Accountability, and the Urgent Need for Strategic Rethinking Author: Dr. Nana Akaeze and Dr. Christian O. Akaeze Abstract Nigerian youths have become more vocal and active in recent years. They now use social media and other platforms to speak up against bad leadership and failed systems. This is a positive change because many generations before now remained silent. However, some of today’s youths are taking the wrong path. Instead of promoting unity, they are spreading hate, division, tribalism, and even violence. Some are now calling for the breakup of Nigeria, believing that forming new nations will solve our problems. This article explains why that approach is harmful and how a better solution is to adopt regional governance within a united Nigeria. It also highlights how youths must take responsibility, embrace peaceful and innovative strategies, and focus on building a better country for all. Introduction: Youths Are Now Speaking Up ...

Rethinking Confraternities Within Higher Institutions in Nigeria: A Case for Registration, Reform, and National Unity

By Dr. Nana Akaeze and Dr. Chris Akaeze A Joint Reflection for The Awake Voice Date: June 1 st , 2025 Abstract Confraternities in Nigerian tertiary institutions are commonly associated with violence and secrecy, overshadowing their origins in civic activism, academic excellence, and brotherhood. This perspective challenges prevailing narratives by arguing for a shift from suppression to structured reform and engagement. Drawing from the historical evolution of groups like the Pyrates and Buccaneers Confraternities, the study highlights their civic roles in youth mentorship, health outreach, and interethnic solidarity. In an era marked by ethnic tension, misinformation, and digital radicalization, the loyalty frameworks within these groups have helped mitigate tribal conflicts and maintain democratic stability. This perspective proposes policy responses, including government regulation, civic reorientation, and the establishment of oversight mechanisms. If reformed and in...

🇳🇬 The Rude Awakening: Why Did It Take a Foreign Voice to Shake Nigeria’s Conscience

By Dr. Nana Akaeze When pulpits go quiet and the poor are forgotten, the Gospel is not proclaimed—it is betrayed. This is my voice. This is my belief. Because faith was never meant to serve the powerful. It was meant to protect the poor. It was meant to confront injustice—not stay comfortable within it. Today, that silence has found a new disguise — a foreign voice claiming to “save” us from ourselves, and suddenly, everyone is awake. A Nation Awakened by a Stranger In the last few days, a wave of headlines and social media chatter has once again gripped Nigeria—this time sparked by a claim from a foreign political figure who says he wants to “save Christians” in Nigeria. Many cheered. Some prayed. Others panicked. But a few of us paused and asked the most important question: Why did it take a foreign voice to remind Nigeria that its people are dying? For years, Nigerians have been crying—villages burned, farmers slaughtered, students kidnapped, soldiers ambush...
